Last year a dunce of a professor at UT San Antonio called Come and Take It, “a slogan that embodies both anti-Mexican and pro-slavery sentiments.” Last week, an FBI document came to light which calls “Come and Take It” and the famous cannon symbols of “Militia Violent Extremism.” This is sad and infuriating. It’s also evidence we are not doing a bang-up job of educating people about Texas history. Ask around. You will find that most can’t tell you what the call “Come and Take It” is about the Battle of Gonzales. That it’s about how colonists stood up to a government trying to disarm them. That it set in course a chain of events that led to a free and independent Texas. We made it obvious by placing “Gonzales – October 02, 1835” on the cannon. Now, if anyone asks about the date…, you can give them a little history lesson. For those unfamiliar, “MOLON LABE” is Greek for “Come and Take It.” It was the battle cry of the three hundred Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae. Their story inspired the men who stood their ground at Gonzales. People knew history back then.
