Post #47 – More Fall Leaves Fell

QUOTE:
“Hannah Arendt, the great political philosopher of the 20th century, said that when a society loses the desire to know the truth, that is a precursor to totalitarianism. And I think that has happened on both the left and the right.”

Good Reading is the Cure for Gullibility.
According to a Pew Research Center poll from 2021, 23% of American adults didn’t read a book in the previous year (2020). But a Gallup poll this year (2022), showed that only 17% of Americans didn’t read a book in the preceding year (2021); so some improvement. However, the poll also showed that the average number of books read by Americans had dropped drastically between 2016 and 2021. More than 2/3 of students heading into high school can’t read proficiently.

So we find ourselves with a population that neither reads nor thinks, but simply does whatever authorities and media outlets say to do. Is that you? I hope not.

HISTORY:
On Sept. 2, 1666, a fire started accidentally in the king’s bakery on London’s Pudding Lane. The weather had been arid and hot, and the wooden buildings nearby caught ablaze. A strong wind encouraged the fire to grow. It couldn’t be contained. Two days later, on Sept. 4, half of London was in flames. The fire wasn’t stopped until Sept. 6. Only 1/5 of London remained by then. Almost all public buildings had been destroyed, and 13,000 homes were lost. Astoundingly, only 6 people died. The tragedy became known as the Great Fire of London.
